This year for Halloween, my little one requested to “be” Disney’s Sofia the First. After having so much fun making our pumpkin scarecrow princess costume last year, I knew I wanted to attempt another one this year! I also wanted to be resourceful and use some items we already had on hand!
We already had a brand-spanking new purple t-shirt, a purple stretch crochet headband, silver sandals, and a silver and lavender tiara, so we were well on our way!
I purchased tulle, rhinestones, thread, white fabric, and shimmery purple ribbon trim at Hobby Lobby. I purchased more tulle at Michael’s. I also purchased white pearl beads (8 strands for $1) at Dollar Tree. All three rolls of tulle were used completely, and 1-2 more rolls would have been handy, honestly. I ended up using 1 purple, 1 lavender, and 1 light blue, which I felt mixed well for the look I was going for!
The tutu portion was no-sew! By folding each strip of tulle in half, pulling the looped end through a hole, then pulling the ends through the loop, you end up with these really neat little knots. I alternated the three colors of tulle all the way around the bottom row of holes, then I added an additional row of tulle.
After seeing a 5-minute skirt tutorial on Pinterest, I decided to sew my very first skirt ever! It was super easy–just using elastic and a bit of fabric. I then added this velvet shimmer trim along the bottom and hemmed it right up! Sewing has intimidated me for years–but it’s actually not nearly as difficult as I’d thought!
I looped some of the beads through the holes on the band of the skirt and hot-glued them in place.
To make Sofia’s amulet, I purchased the perfect rhinestones at Hobby Lobby and hot-glued one to an old piece of my costume jewelry.
For the record–none of the clothing pieces are attached to one another. We basically just layered the skirts on top of one another and they stay in place pretty well.
I ended up forgoing any extra details, because honestly, my little one was happy with it and ready to dress up! Best of all, by watching Hobby Lobby sales, I was able to get tulle, ribbon, and rhinestones all 50% off!
